Discover the city center of Johannesburg, whose geometrical design and high skyscrapers irresistibly bring Manhattan Island to mind, and Soweto, Johannesburg’s South Western Townships. Visit the Apartheid Museum dedicated to recounting the history of the rise and fall of apartheid in 20th century in South Africa.

Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city and capital of Gauteng province, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. Other Soweto museums that recount the struggle to end segregation include the somber Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, a former prison complex.

    An official policy of racial segregation formerly practised in the Republic of South Africa.
    This museum next to Gold Reef City illustrates the rise and fall of Apartheid. Visitors walk through the 22 individual exhibition areas, which contain film footage, photographs , text panels and artifacts illustrating the events and human stories behind apartheid. At the end you ’ ll have a far deeper understanding of the why and how of apartheid and the new South Africa of today.

After you have been collected from your hotel you will make your way to Soweto. Along the way you will drive past the Diepkloof ext, Baragwanath Taxi Rank and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, to name a few. You will visit an informal settlement, drive past Maponya Shopping Mall, walk through Freedom Square and Freedom Charter Memorial. Walk through the Regina Mundi Church and drive along Vilakazi Street.

You will also have the opportunity to visit Mandela House Museum, entrance fees to the Museum included. Visit the Hector Pieterson Museum, outside the Prescient. See the homes of Nobel peace prize winner Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Towards the end of the tour you will visit a local shebeen and taste a type of beer drunk by the people of Soweto if your older than 18 years (time permitting and beer own account). On the drive back to your hotel you will go past the Soccer City Stadium.
